THE FLAG

The choice of a new flag was part of the negotations when Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990. The South African flag was designed by a former South African state herald, Fred Bowell. It was first used on 27 april 1994 and was chosen to represent the new democracy. The flags colours are green, black, white, blue, gold and red. Three of the colours, yellow, black and green are found in the banner of the African National Congress (ANC). The triangle that continues into a horizontal line can be interpreted as their seperated way to unity.
